Your Rights When Buying Electronics Online in the UK
Buying online in the UK comes with strong legal protection. Here is a short guide to the main rights you have when you buy from a business. It is general information rather than legal advice.
14 days to change your mind
Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, most online purchases can be cancelled from the moment you order until 14 days after you receive the goods. You then have a further 14 days to send them back. There are exceptions, such as sealed software that you have unsealed.
30 days to reject faulty goods
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. If they are not, you can reject them for a full refund within 30 days.
After 30 days
You can ask for a repair or a replacement. If that does not fix the problem, you may be entitled to a price reduction or a refund. If a fault appears within six months of delivery, it is generally presumed to have been there from the start, unless the seller can show otherwise.
How long your rights last
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland you can generally bring a claim for up to six years, and in Scotland up to five years. How long a product should reasonably last depends on what it is and what it cost.
A warranty is extra
A manufacturer's warranty adds to your legal rights and does not replace them.
Where to get help
