How to Choose a Smartphone: A Practical UK Buying Guide

A selection of smartphones

Most phones today do the everyday jobs well. The right choice comes down to how you use yours and how long you plan to keep it.

Storage

Photos, video and apps fill a phone faster than you might expect. If you take a lot of video or plan to keep the phone for several years, go for more storage than you need today. Check whether the model accepts a memory card, because many do not.

Battery and charging

Battery capacity is only part of the story, since the screen and processor affect how long a charge lasts. Look at independent reviews for real-world battery life. Also check whether a charger comes in the box, as many phones are now sold without one.

Software support

This is the point people most often overlook. Security updates keep your phone safe to use, so find out how long the manufacturer promises to provide them. A slightly dearer phone with longer support can be better value over its life.

Network and SIM

An unlocked phone works with any UK network, which leaves you free to choose a SIM-only deal. Check your network's coverage map for 5G at home and at work before paying extra for it. If you want to use an eSIM, confirm that both the phone and your network support it.

New or refurbished?

A refurbished phone can cost much less than a new one. Our guide to refurbished phones explains what to look for.
