How to Choose a Laptop for Study, Work or Home

A laptop computer

Laptop specifications can look like alphabet soup. Start with what you will do on it, then spend your money where it makes a difference.

Memory (RAM)

RAM decides how many things you can do at once. 8GB handles web browsing and office work, while 16GB is a more comfortable choice if you keep many tabs open or want the laptop to last for years. Check whether the memory can be upgraded later, since on many thin laptops it cannot.

Storage

Choose a solid state drive (SSD). It makes the whole machine feel faster to start and use. 256GB suits someone who keeps most files in the cloud, and 512GB or more is better for large files and games.

Processor

Newer generally beats higher-numbered, so compare the generation and read reviews rather than judging by the name alone. Everyday tasks do not need the most powerful chip. Video editing and gaming do benefit from a stronger processor and a dedicated graphics card.

Screen and size

If you carry your laptop daily, weight and battery life matter more than a large screen. Look for a Full HD (1920 x 1080) display as a minimum for sharp text, and try to check brightness in reviews if you work near a window.

Ports and keyboard

Count the ports you need for your monitor, memory sticks and charger. If you type a lot, a comfortable keyboard is worth more than a small jump in speed.
